Grandpa Bob's Wedding

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to Idaho and back again. McKenna and I flew to Grand Junction to pick up Grandma Mary. She hates flying, so we decided that we would drive her up to Idaho so that she would get a chance to go too! We left about 6:30am on Wednesday and got into Grand Junction CO around 12:30. Grandma picked us up and we drove to Salt Lake, getting there around 8-ish. Now McKenna had been driving all day, no nap, no structure, no healthy food, and she actually did okay! She definitely was tired and passed out that night!

--Kenna watching the airplanes in Denver--

--we had pizza margarita for lunch, she didn't want the "green things" on hers, but ended up liking basil after all. We are just goofing around here :) --

Thursday we drove on to Idaho Falls getting there around 1pm. Gary, Susanne and Brandon all got in that night as well! Another day with no naps and McKenna was pretty agreeable, surprisingly enough! Maybe she will be ready for Disneyworld in September after all! That evening we played cards, ate dinner, and just had fun catching up! Kenna thought it was really cool that we got to sleep in my dad's camper!

Friday we went to the church for rehearsal and Kenna got a nap that afternoon. (She really does much better with a nap!) The wedding wasn't until 5:30 so we did more gabbing and game playing. Then we went to the wedding. It was not that formal, but Brandon and I, and Brooke and Hannah (Julieann's daughters) all stood at the front during the ceremony. It was a Lutheran service with a preacher in a formal robe. At one point McKenna asked my Grandma "why is that man wearing a dress?" What do you say to that. It was all I could do to keep from laughing standing in front of everyone! She was in the front row and kept coming up and standing by me, then going back to sit by Grandma...oh well, she did good for having no idea what was going on!

Near the end of the ceremony the preacher said a prayer and asked if anyone would like to come up and take communion, Brandon and I sat down, and McKenna wanted to know why she couldn't go up and have a snack with everyone. It seemed the wrong time to try and explain what the heck was happening so I just told her to shhh!

After the ceremony we went to Johnny Carino's, a local Italian place. They had a buffet with pasta and salad, and a huge dessert buffet as well. We ate, said Hi to people we hadn't seen in a long time, and went back to Dad's after that. Another night of game playing and chatting and relaxing!

Saturday Kenna, Brandon and I headed to Menan! We had a GREAT day spending time with all my relatives on my mom's side! They were so nice and everyone brought salads and desserts, chicken and rolls, drinks, the whole shebang! Kenna had such a fun time playing with her cousin Isabelle and Shawnte! The girls played all afternoon together! I pretty much had to force her to leave at 7 that night! It was so nice catching up with everyone. It has been two years since I have been back to Idaho, and the trip was long overdue! I got to see everyone briefly in September for Chelsey's wedding, but wasn't long enough!

--isabelle and kenna, they had such a fun time together, Kenna didn't want to leave!--

--Kenna wasn't scared at all, must be because of Gona's horses--

--we have the most AMAZING family. They put on a huge spread with chicken, salads, wonderful desserts...and you couldn't beat the company!--

Sunday we went swimming! Julieann has such a neat arrangement with 11 of her neighbors! There is this huge property in the middle of 12 houses. There is a park and a full sized swimming pool with a slide and diving board. Everyone pays yearly to fund the pool and those 12 families get to use it! We went to Walgreens and bought cheap princess life rings, and Kenna and Julieann's niece Zadie swam for at least an hour! Those little rings were the best $2 ever spent! After a day of swimming we left for Salt Lake that evening. We pulled into the Hyatt at around 6 and walked down the street to California Pizza Kitchen (one of my favorite places!) We had dinner and walked back, then Kenna and I went swimming again in the hotel pool! She is going to LOVE swimming lessons here in a few weeks!

--this is my new stepsister Brooke....I think we will get along great..both goofballs!--

--kenna and grandpa bob...the little princess life-ring made her feel invincible--

--quite the little swimmer! She even attempted the waterslide a few times! Zadie and her dad are swimming too--

Monday we drove back to Grand Junction, went out to dinner and just went to bed early. Then Tuesday we flew back to Des Moines. I had class that evening (last one of this semester, woohoo!) Wow, I am tired just writing this one!

--pretty desert--

--cool views from a rest stop--

The drive was quite pretty, and Grandma and I chatted the whole way so time went by pretty quickly! Although it was a crazy trip, we had such a great time, and Kenna is quite the little traveler! Of course the portable DVD player and endless supply of princess movies didn't hurt ;)

Camping!

I am very behind - we have been busy! 3 weeks ago we went camping with the Andersen's. The week before was NUTS because daddy was in California for a conference. And we all know what a pain packing for camping with kids is...well, doing it on your own is worse :) Saturday morning I was supposed to go on a 45 mile bikeride in Madison county...but we had a severe thunderstorm warning, and I woke up and couldn't believe the crazy wind/rain/hail combination. So I scrapped that. We even talked about forgetting the camping trip - but the weather cleared up just before josh got home at 2, so we went anyway!

It was the PERFECT time to go! No one was at the campground, the weater was great, and we had an awesome time :) The girls brought their bikes, and Chad brought Maggie. We had hot dogs and Guiredelli s'mores, played on the playground, and got out of there about 9am the next day, right before it started raining again. What a fun time!

The only major unplanned event was racoons opening our tupperware and eating our banana bars! Smart little rascals. Also the boys spent the majority of the time starting a fires because the wood/area was so wet. But they got it going! Yay mountain men :)

--kenna cooking her hot dog--

--chloe eating beans tara made--

--the girls were hungry after all the playing!--

--starting to get dark. You can see our tent - Andersen's campsite is behind ours--

--Chloe didn't bring a chair - but Kenna shared. They are screaming here at the camera :) --

First Punishment

Well it was bound to happen....time outs weren't enough, what do we do?

I was at class the other night and McKenna was out playing with Megan. Josh specifically told her to stay in ether Megan's yard or our yard. Well, when he went to look for her, she had wandered into Mariah's backyard (all of our yards touch.) So he made her come home and officially "grounded" her from playing with the neighbors until after the weekend. He told her 5 days.

So - every day she lets us know, "4 more days mommy" or "3 more days daddy." Tonight she said, "So first there is tomorrow, then there will be another tomorrow, and then after the really far away tomorrow, then it will be 5 days and I can play with Megan." I suppose that she feels tomorrow is a term that means the day after now....or maybe the day after the day after now...too funny little one :)

I bet she will ask next time she leaves the yard as well!

We were SOOO proud of McKenna's performance on Saturday. This was the first recital she ever performed in and she did just wonderfully! The recital was at a HUGE facility at ISU. Ankeny Dance rented it out for the whole weekend. The show started at 2pm so I frantically went through a mental checklist (1) outfit, check (2) ballet shoes, check (3) tap shoes for second number with teddy bear in ziplock bag with name, check (4) clothes for afterwards, check (5) hair done tightly in a ponytail, check (6) stage makeup applied, check (7) spray glitter all over, check (8) camera charged with extra memory card, check (9) snacks for Zachy, check. I felt really good!

Then disaster hit me as soon as we pulled into the parking lot in Ames...I forgot her crown!! Oh no..this school is sooo particular I was sure they weren't going to let her dance, that I would be deemed worst mother ever, and that we would be in therapy for the rest of our lives. Luckily, Gona kept a cool head, snuck off the to party store and bought a pseudo dance crown that almost was an exact replica...thank goodness for Gona!!!

--there were over 40 acts, so McKenna had to wait backstage with stage moms for her turn--

--quick picture of the curtain before it went up--

--one of the contemporary routines I caught -was really lovely!--

--the kids were so tired by the end..about 5 minutes after we left, they passed out--

--tired little dancing queen!--

I'm a little biased, but I think she stole the show! She's on the far right. The teachers chose her to lead the skipping, and the exit from the circle...she tried so very hard to do it just right...I could not have been prouder, and I was definitely sobbing by the end!

Here is the tap video, sorry the video is such poor quality? Again, such a good performance :)

Laundry Day

It may not be that exciting to you, but the kids have become quite the laundry helpers. They usually spend more time making the laundry basket a boat, car, bed, etc...than folding laundry, but it is still a hoot.
--I think this was a boat?--

--Zackey thinks that playing in Rylee's kennel is HILARIOUS!--

--now its bed time :)--

Daddy's Birthday

As we get older, birthdays are less about presents and more about fun and family, and in our house FOOD! So I ask Josh what he wants for his birthday dinner. He chooses shoulder steak, asparagus, caprese salad and strawberry shortcake. At the last minute I invited Andersen's over, because cake is better when shared :)

The kids played all evening and chowed down, what a fun evening!

--total chaos, everyone running around..very fun--

--lucy is getting so big! very cute--

--the kids played great together!--

--happy birthday daddy! Yummy cake!--
