Crocker Cruisers

For the last school year I have run the Crocker Cruiser program. It was the brainchild of a friend of mine, and a lot of work, but so much fun for the kids. Essentially they run twice a week during recess (optional program) In the attempt to rack up enough miles to equate to a marathon.

So far this school year 75 kids already completed this with three running two marathons, so far. It is such an awesome way to teach the kids goalsetting, endurance, responsibility, and it gives kids that have a hard time finding something to do a creative outlet at recess time. I have met so many wonderful people that are so giving of their time, and it’s giving me a chance to get to know a lot of people at the school. Grayson and McKenna just love the program! I have to organize the volunteers, six of them twice a week, and overall about 650 hours of volunteer time in the school year. I track the mileage by kid, teacher, and grade district competition amongst the different teachers. There’s lots of incentives along the way with kids grabbing a straw turning that in for a punch on theit card and then getting a charm every 2 1/2 miles. So fun!

At the end of the year we organize a fun day for all the marathon finishers. They get a T-shirt and an actual marathon medal from the Des Moines marathon.
