April's Visit

I had so much fun this last week because my best friend April came to visit. She got here last Tuesday and left yesterday. We toured Salisbury House, went on a home tour, shopped at the farmers market, ate at Denny and Kathy's, took Kenna to her first movie, drove to Omaha and went to the zoo, and just had a good time vegging out and watching movies.

On Tuesday April got in kind of late. I had both kids in tow because Josh had work to do. We picked her up at the airport and got home in time to give baths and put kids to bed. I am sure this is her idea of a dream vacation, but it was fun. We watched so many movies while she was here, I don't remember what we watched that night, but sure it was good :)

On Wednesday Kenna went to Heathers so that we could tour the Salisbury House. It is a huge mansion in Des Moines that is built to look like a 19th century castle. Kenna would not have done well, but Zachary slept through the whole thing :) We were on tour with a mom that had a 2 and 4 year old. I still couldn't believe that she would bring them probably right during their lunch/nap time and expect them to pay attention to a historical tour. They made it about halfway through before the kids endless whining and inappropriate behavior made them leave. The tour was much better after that :)

That night we went to Denny and Kathy's for a small bonfire and burgers. It is always fun to bring out of towners out to their acreage. Very gracious hosts.
On Thursday we took Kenna to the park and had a picnic lunch. Then we played the rest of the afternoon. As soon as Josh got home April and I took the bikes down to the river and rode about 8 miles of my favorite bike trail. We both decided we were tired and hungry, so turned around and headed home after that. I was also excited to see that our strawberries are coming in. We have picked about a half pint every day the last week!

Friday we got up and went to the Des Moines Home Show. Every year builders show off their skills by building one house on a street of dreams. Most houses are in the $500,000-$1 million range. This year two of the houses weren't finished, but we still got to see 6 amazing houses. Our favorite was a custom home that no one could tell us the price of. You walk into the house and all you see is giant 30 foot windows that overlook a pool. The pool is running over the edge creating a water feature that is flanked by fire. At the end of the pool is a pool house with full kitchen and bath. The room off the kitchen has walls that open up and remote control mosquito netting opening up their house to the pool. It also had a home theater room, dance studio and sound proof music room. Needless to say it was amazing!!! I am sure that if someone was just giving it away I wouldn't mind living there!
After we got done touring the homes, we went to Mojos for lunch. Both kids were exhausted when we got home. Saturday we went to farmers market. I was surprised at how much produce was there. We also had a good time sampling goodies and looking at all the cakes, flowers, popcorn, and other yummies. I also got to see the Top Chef winners from last season...I was a little starstruck! Then, that afternoon we all went to Up (the movie.) Kenna was a little bored..It was kind of adult humor. Zachary cried for less than 30 seconds, and did great the rest of the time. I would say the first movie was a success! She did think getting her own popcorn was really cool!
